Cinema St. Louis and Grand Center present the 2nd Annual Cinemania free outdoor films series. This year's theme is musicals. Join us on the lawn across from the Contemporary Art Museum on Washington Avenue between Grand and Spring. Each week's show will begin approximately at 9 p.m., but please arrive early to get a good spot on the lawn and adjacent parking lot!
July 5th - An American in Paris
(1951, directed by Vincente Minelli, rated: Approved, 113 minutes) Jerry Mulligan, a struggling American painter in Paris, is "discovered" by an influential heiress with an interest in more than Jerry's art. Jerry in turn falls for Lise, a young French girl already engaged to a cabaret singer. Jerry jokes, sings and dances with his best friend, an acerbic would-be concert pianist, while romantic complications abound. Stars Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. Won 6 Oscars, nominated for 8.
July 12th - Funny Girl
(1968, directed by William Wyler, rated G, 151 minutes) The life of comedienne Fannie Brice, from her early days in the Jewish slums of the Lower East Side, to the height of her career with the Ziegfeld Follies, including her marriage to and eventual divorce from her first husband, Nick Arnstein. Stars Barbara Streisand and Omar Sharif. Won 1 Oscars, nominated for 8.
July 19th - West Side Story
(1961, directed by Jerome Robbins, rated: Approved, 152 minutes) West Side Story is the award winning adaptation of the classic romantic tragedy, Romeo and Juliette. The feuding families become two warring New York City gangs- the white Jets led by Riff and the Puerto Rican Sharks, led by Brenardo. Their hatred escalates to a point where neither can coexist with any form of understanding. But when Riff's best friend (and former Jet) Tony and Bernardo's younger sister Maria meet at a dance, no one can do anything to stop their love. Maria and Tony begin meeting in secret, planning to run away. Then the Skarks and Jets plan a rumble under the highway - whoever wins gains control of the streets. Maria sends Tony to stop it, hoping it can end the violence. It goes terribly wrong, and before the lovers know what's happened, tragedy strikes and doesn't stop until the climatic and heartbreaking ending. Stars Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer and Rita Moreno. Won 10 Oscars, nominated for 11.
July 26th - Moulin Rouge!
(2001, directed by Baz Luhrman, rated: PG-13, 127 minutes) The year is 1899, and Christian, a young English writer, has come to Paris to follow the Bohemian revolution taking hold of the city's drug and prostitute infested underworld. And nowhere is the thrill of the underworld more alive than at the Moulin Rouge, a night club where the rich and poor men alike come to be entertained by the dancers, but things take a wicked turn for Christian as he starts a deadly love affair with the star courtesan of the club, Satine. But her affections are also coveted by the club's patron: the Duke. A dangerous love triangle ensues as Satine and Christian attempt to fight all odds to stay together but a force that not even love can conquer is taking its toll on Satine. Stars Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor, John Leguizamo and Jim Broadbent. Won 2 Oscars, nominated for 8.
