FERRON: GIRL ON A ROAD

Gerry Rogers, Canada, 2008, 77 min.
Sponsored by The LGBT Community Center of St. Louis

Ferron is an icon of women's music - a folk-rock singer songwriter often compared to Bob Dylan for her intricate lyrics backed by guitar-driven melodies. Back in the day, Ferron gave the movement serious musical cred with her melancholy ballads, and at times caused controversy by including men in her band. Girl on a Road picks up Ferron as she reunites with her band and hits the road after a ten-year absence. The film documents the kick-off Vancouver concert, celebrating Ferron in performance and in backstage interviews.

MISSISSIPPI QUEEN

Paige Williams, U.S., 2009, 63 min.
Sponsored by Show Me No Hate

Growing up a lesbian in the south, documentary filmmaker Paige Williams endured her share of intolerance. After coming out to her Baptist family as a senior in high school, her parents formed Mississippi's only ex-gay ministry to help those conflicted between their sexual desire and religion chose the path that they believe God intended. Ten years later, Williams and her partner are expecting a child, prompting her to address the lingering contention between her lifestyle and her parents' beliefs. Mississippi Queen provides a personal look into the world of ex-gay ministries while also assembling candid testimonies from ex-gays who explain the reasons why they abandoned their homosexual lives. Williams looks beyond the controversial subject matter to offer an intimate, balanced account of the people these ex-gay ministries have helped and the ones who've been hurt by them.

LEO'S ROOM

Enrique Buchichio, Uruguay, 2009, 92 min., Spanish with English subtitles
Sponsored by Growing American Youth

Two former primary school classmates, now in their mid-twenties, initiate a friendship after running into one another by chance on the street. Leo has just been dumped by his girlfriend and has taken to cruising for men online instead of focusing on his thesis. Like Leo, Caro has her priorities on hold, spending most of her days in bed popping anti-depressants. With Leo unwilling to address his sexual confusion and Caro unable to speak of what's ailing her, they spend their time together listening to music in Leo's rented room, providing one another with an escape from their seemingly overwhelming loneliness. First-time director Enrique Buchichio fascinatingly captures the frustration that comes with being in one's mid-twenties and explores the ways in which people's fear of rejection keeps them from exposing their true selves.

Shown with short subject "I'm Gay" (Cyra K. Polizzi & Christopher Weiher, U.S., 2009, 4 min) Told from the perspective of the wonderfully imaginative protagonist and that of his loving parents, this short film celebrates the excitement, apprehension, sense of community and embracing of gay stereotypes that often accompany those two little words, "I'm gay."
