A moving story about the pursuit of a lost heritage, “Montedoro” is based on lead actress Pia Marie Mann’s true story. When a middle-aged American woman (Mann) unexpectedly discovers her actual origins after her adoptive parents die, she goes in search of the birth mother she’s never known. Traveling to Montedoro, a remote town in the Basilicata region of Southern Italy, she finds an apocalyptic scene on arrival: The village, resting on a majestic hill, is completely abandoned. A chance meeting with villagers who had never wanted to leave their home sends the woman on a magical voyage through time and memory, and she reconnects with her unknown past, her family story, and her ancient and mysterious birthplace -- an extinct community that comes to life one last time. The website I Love Italian Movies offers particular praise to director Antonello Faretta, who “takes a seemingly very specific circumstance of one woman’s story and makes it wondrously universal, urging us all to look to our own roots to understand who we really are.”
