The New Fire
As the effects of climate change become more and more apparent, a new generation of nuclear engineers is on the rise, hoping to help solve the greatest environmental challenge humanity has ever faced. Despite the huge growth in renewable energy and energy efficiency in recent years, most of America’s clean energy still comes from nuclear. Nuclear energy has been vilified in much of the environmental community, yet the next-generation reactors currently in development may prove to be the key to avoiding climate catastrophe. Filmed across four continents over the course of 22 months, “The New Fire” tells the story of the young engineers who are developing those reactors, which they hope will provide clean and safe solutions to the world’s future energy needs. Emmy-winning director David Schumacher follows the growth of two nuclear startup companies, details the efforts of Bill Gates’ nuclear company to bring affordable clean energy to developing countries, and features renowned climate scientist Jim Hansen as he travels the globe advocating for nuclear power. Combining vérité scenes with archival footage, animation, and commentary by leading experts, “The New Fire” is an eye-opening look at a planet in crisis and at the unlikely heroes who are trying to save it.
